Shamwari Conservation Experience

The Covid19 Blogs No 2

Managing a game reserve like Shamwari includes monitoring the carrying capacity of the bush for the amount of animals in an area.  The state of the vegetation, climate, water supplies and counting wildlife is part of this process. Excess animals are captured and moved to other parts of the reserve or sold to other game reserves.

This process often involves our Veterinary students too as darting the wildlife from helicopters is required.  Check out the short clipto see what skill and practice is needed by both helicopter pilot and darter!

In late May last year our wildlife team asked us to assist with the capture of zebra.  This was a great opportunity for our volunteers to have a close look at a behind the scenes work at Shamwari.  Even better, their involvement was needed! It was a special and educational day.

Also in May last year the First Time Ever All Girls Alicedale Soccer Team beat our asses!  We have played against the boys many times, but the Bishop Burton Group was the first against the brand new all girls team.

The Alicedale community is blessed with support willing to step up to help the youth in the area for a better future.  They supported the opportunity for the young girls to play soccer and they loved it!

We did our best to put up a good equal game in this exciting challenge, but the girls took a well-deserved match, fair and square!  The first of many more to come.

A very special day.
