Donate a Brick

Sinovuyoday Care Centre is situated in Paterson and is the very first and poorest of the day care centres we started supporting back in 2010. Since then, the condition of the school building has deteriorated to the point where it is not safe or hygienic for the kids to be inside anymore. The building still has clay floors and is made of corrugated sheet metal. The roof is full of holes and everything gets wet when it rains. The kitchen is probably in the poorest state. The light bulbs hang from loose wire and the only plugs are fed through the windows via extension cords. There is no running water in the building and the teachers have to carry water from outside with buckets. Kids use donated porter potties that are placed outside the building.

We would like to upgrade Sinovuyoday Care Centre with a new building. Donate a brick or more for R100 and help us with our biggest project yet!

Cost: R100/brick

Need: R450 000

Includes:Brand new prefab building. Two classrooms. Kitchen with basin. Two toilets and basin. Septic tank drainage system. Electricity, plugs, 5 lights, veranda.

Soccer Boots for the Friendly City Soccer Club

Sports is one of the only activities that keeps kids and young adults active and away from trouble in our local townships. Belonging to a sports club gives the youth of Alicedale a sense of belonging and pride.  For this reason we feel it important to keep the guys on the field. They boys from the Friendly City Soccer Club in Alicedale are currently playing in the top 3 of their league, but the picture shows that they are running on their final legs. A lot of the youngsters play with shoes of different sizes or shoes that are stitched up and duct taped together.

Cost: R800 per pair.

 Welding Course for Derek

Derek is a man in his 30’s with a good heart. He moved to the Eastern Cape a few months ago with no job and no friends. He met Peggy through church and she offered him a bed and food. Peggy, looks after 8 neglected children in her house. Derek is now helping Peggy with maintenance on the house, helping the kids with their homework and has even taught one of the 7 year old girls how to read in English. Derek is good with his hands but has never had the opportunity to get a qualification behind his name. Our aim is to fund raise for Derek to attend a welding course so that he could start his own small business. He also intends to make curios from scrap metal found on the dump to sell to tourists.

Course price: R15 000 Course includes: Weekend course plus a start-up welding machine and kit.

SCE helper for Hendrik Kanisse Combined School

We are quite fond of this school as it is well run compared to other government schools in the same impoverished situation. The kids are tidy and on time. They greet guests and the teachers are teaching large classes, where there aren’t even enough desks and chairs. We run a few programs at the school, but struggle to find times where we do not interfere with the kids' school work. Sometimes we have to cancel plans because we do not have the staff to consistently run some of our projects. We would like to pay a community representative to continue to run our programs when we cannot be there. This person’s duty will be to help and arrange computer classes, music classes and extra study groups for kids who struggle with subjects, art projects and environmental projects.

Cost: R1000 per month

Computer Training for Siphokazi

Siphokazi is one of the child minors and admin assistants at CARE, a community center based in Alicedale. Since the government does not often play their part in providing regular funds to support the social work the ladies do at CARE, we have decided to jump in and create small businesses opportunity within the center. A generous donation made by Kesgrave High School, England, gave us the opportunity to do so. We aim to get Siphokazi trained (refresher course) so that she is able to run the lab and assist in computer literacy for the community and make a bit of extra cash on the side for the centre.

Cost: R1550 / Includes: 3 day course  Microsoft Office. / Excludes: Taxi fare, accommodation and food.

Stimulation/Equipment for Disabled Children, Elderly and the Bed Ridden.

Our local townships have quite a number of mentally and physically disabled kids and adults. These children are not attending school and are often the forgotten ones as there are no centres where they can get special care and stimulation. There is also nothing to do at home.

Needs:

  • Toys –brain development.
  • Second hand tablets with pre-loaded brain games that are easy to use.
  • Squeezy balls to work on hand and eye coordination.
  • Second hand leg braces, crutches, adult diapers, bed rollers/stretchers to lift people, potties, other relevant equipment that would improve quality of life of the elderly and bedridden.

Pet Outreach

Our local townships both have 10 000 plus citizens and nearly every home has at least one pet (mostly dogs). Unfortunately, due to the socio-economical situation in South Africa, most people are unemployed, only relying on government grants and pension funds to survive. Each township house also has many family members sharing the same rooms and pets sleep outside to act as guard animals or alarms. The township pets we encounter are usually in very bad condition (starved and infested with external and internal parasites) and although we cannot buy every pet food, we can do something about the parasites that live in and on them and give them a better quality of life. We can also educate the owner on how to care for their pet with little money.

COST / NEEDS:

  • Fibritexspray (250ml) –R170/bottle (30-40 dogs)
  • De-wormer –R10 per dog
  • Long dog leashes. Most dogs are tied up in their yards in the sun with short pieces of rope, 24 hours a day

Child minder for Peggy’s Street Children

Peggy is a kind lady from Paterson who was retrenched a few years ago. She has her own grown-up children but has not been able to turn a blind eye to the neglected street children in her township. The children have parents but they are alcoholics or do not care about them and when they were found they were dirty and hungry on the streets. She has 8 young children that permanently live in her home, but the numbers fluctuate every month with new children coming in that need temporary care (food and a bath). Peggy has requested for a helper as she is not able to cope with the kids laundry, education, cooking and other needs by herself. Her daughter helps her when she is home, but Peggy is mostly stuck when she has babies to look after at home and there is no-one to walk the kids to school or the clinic.

Cost: R1000 per month

Dishes for the Learners at Hendrik Kanisse Combined School, Alicedale

Hendrik Kanisseis just one of those schools that we like to support due to the way they carry themselves whenever we arrive to help at the school. The school has a government food scheme but there are not enough dishes for nearly 600 kids. Currently learners have to wait for the others to finish their food so that they can use the same dish.

Cost: R20 per bowl.  170 dishes

Rubbish Bins For Alicedale

Bad municipal services is one of the biggest issues in townships in South Africa. Our towns are littered with rubbish because there are no rubbish bins to put the trash into. There are however paid people and trucks to collect the rubbish, but they all end up in piles and burned, and ends up flying around once again. Because of kind sponsors we have recently put in 20 rubbish bins in our local town, Alicedale. We have arranged with the municipality to come and collect the rubbish and we are proud to say that they are used and we have since had many more requests for more bins in the heavily used areas. The cool thing about this program is that, this might not tugon everyone’s heart strings, but it is definitely one of our most impactful projects that benefits ALL people.

Cost: R350 / bin

SCE COMMUNITY SHOP

We have a little community shop at SCE and we encourage volunteers to take their time to visit it. 100% of all items sold in this shop goes back to the people who made them. The items produced are one of a kind and often not of the greatest quality. As we are trying to uplift our local communities with the opportunity for job creation, we thank you in advance for looking at the bigger picture and for your support.

Gloria’s Beadwork

Mamma Gloria lives in Paterson and is retired. She did and continues to do social work in the community, but these days it if focused on the elderly. Gloria and her girls make beautiful African bead work and sewing work. With the funds made from the sales, Gloria runs soup kitchens from her house for the elderly.

David’s Recycled Art

David lives in a township in Paterson. He loves nature and interprets it through the art he makes. As David does not have much money, he picks up what others throw out and makes art from it. He does not have anywhere to sell his art and we have offered to try.

100% of the sales of these products goes to David.

CARE’s Beadwork

The beadwork and other hand made items are made by a small team of ladies who work at CARE. CARE is a multi-purpose centre in Alicedale. The centre looks after vulnerable children, the elderly, bedridden people, counsels those with HIV Aids, TB, woman abuse/rape and runs a day care centre on the side. Although this centre does receive funds through donations or other organizations, they are always strapped for cash and often run out of food, office supplies and medical supplies.

If you are keen to donate on any of our projects, drop us an email indicating where you would like your donation to go.  if you would like to donate, but for no specific project, just write :any project".  This allows us to send you pictures once the project is completed.
